How the stump grinding calculator works

Stump grinding is priced mostly by the stump's width. The calculator puts each stump into the size band of a published Victorian cost guide, multiplies by how many stumps are that size, and adds the rows up. It also works out the same guide's rule of thumb of $3 to $4.50 per centimetre, as a second check. Both figures come from one publisher, Milone's Tree Solutions; nothing is blended with another source.

Your own price comes after the stumps and access have been seen. Ask for it in writing, with each stump, the grinding depth and the grindings listed.

Common questions about stump grinding costs

Is the calculator's figure a quote?

No. It's a published guide from Milone's Tree Solutions, a Melbourne and regional Victorian tree service, applied to your measurements by our arithmetic. A stump price is confirmed after someone has seen the stumps, the access and the ground, and put it in writing.

Where do I measure the stump?

The guide from Milone's Tree Solutions says to measure the stump diameter at the widest point at ground level, in centimetres. Include the flare where the big roots start, and take a photo with the tape in shot.

Why does a 60 cm stump show two price bands?

The published table lists medium stumps as 30 to 60 cm and large stumps as 60 to 100 cm, so a stump measured at exactly 60 cm (or 100 cm) sits in both. The calculator shows both bands rather than pick one.

Are several stumps cheaper per stump?

The calculator multiplies the per-stump figures, so it doesn't assume a discount. Milone's Tree Solutions says most arborists offer multi-stump discounts because the equipment is already on site, and that a minimum call-out (typically $180 to $220 in metropolitan Melbourne) means even a small stump will generally cost at least that much. Ask for each stump to be priced in your written quote.

Does the price include taking the grindings away?

The published bands don't say. Raking the grindings back into the hole is usually the cheapest option; taking them away is extra. The City of Greater Bendigo's free domestic green waste doesn't cover tree stumps.
